Convert a bank statement PDF to CSV (and which CSV you actually need)
Plain CSV, Xero CSV and QuickBooks CSV from a bank statement PDF: what the columns are, how dates and signs differ, and how to get each in seconds.
"CSV" from a bank statement means three different files depending on where it's going.
Plain CSV
One row per transaction: date, value date, description, details, withdrawal, deposit, balance, check. Dates in ISO format (2025-03-14) so they sort correctly anywhere. Use this for Excel, Google Sheets, pandas, or any custom tool.
Xero import CSV
Xero wants a single signed amount column (negative for money out), dates as dd/mm/yyyy, and columns named Date, Amount, Payee, Description, Reference. Full steps in the Xero guide.
QuickBooks CSV
Three columns: Date, Description, Amount (signed). Steps in the QuickBooks guide.
Getting any of them
On StatementSheet, pick the format from the dropdown before dropping the PDF. The same parser produces all three, so the numbers are identical whichever you choose, and each row has been reconciled against the bank's printed balance.
Opening a CSV in Excel without breaking it
Excel sometimes turns 2025-03-14 into a date in your locale and strips leading zeros from reference numbers. If you'll be editing in Excel, choose the Excel format instead; it keeps types intact and adds the Statement summary sheet.
